Sony Vaio P: first grip first and disappointments

We had the opportunity to have in hand a few days a copy of the new computer pre ultra portable Sony Vaio P. Particularly compact, lightweight design with a very licked, the Vaio P shattered the border between notebook and NETBOOK. However, several technological choices made by Sony seem highly questionable. Decryption.

Announced at the recent CES in Las Vegas, the Sony Vaio P raises some curiosity with its totally new positioning. At the time NETBOOK - it is very small and light - this computer is also in the course of the notebook, particularly because of its price, much higher than most of its competitors.

But we believe the Vaio P is primarily a NETBOOK. Structured around an Intel Atom dual core clocked at 1.33 GHz, it comes with 2 GB of RAM. These specifications are quite close (although slightly higher) than other configurations netBook market.

The same format for the same width, but greatly reduced in the sense of depth (Sony abandoned altogether trackpad), and thickness, which is almost twice as thick as the netBook competitors. Finally, the weight is simply amazing: the Vaio has only 624 grams on our balance.

Operating system and screen: two major differences

Where the Vaio P differs widely from other netBook market is on the choice of operating system (Windows Vista) and the resolution of the screen.

To be precise, our preproduction model was equipped with a SP1 version of Windows Vista Home Premium. The Windows Experience Index User stood at 2.7 points, compared to 3.7 score achieved by a Dell Latitude E4300 notebook. Finally, knowing that on average, users of Windows Vista on desktops have a Windows User Experience which is usually between 4 and 5.

Windows Vista does not appear to be suitable for an Intel Atom, even dual-core, and even equipped by 2 GB of RAM. The whole is slow or very slow at times, and each handling requests, see wait several seconds before the system reacts and the display is refreshed.

We would therefore seem more appropriate to engage with a computer operating system Windows XP Netbook, and possibly to offer a Linux version. This is not so, and the potential purchaser of the Vaio P will accommodate Windows Vista.
